Here’s the secret formula to relaxation

The best way to look after your wellbeing and mental health is to take breaks and relax. Obviously, that's easier said than done, and that's why we have created this simple guide to relaxation which combines listening to the soothing sounds of relaxing music and meditation.

Sleep is a completely natural activity that our bodies should be able to do without issues and yet, with everything happening in our world nowadays, more and more people struggle to sleep well. Our sleeping experience is increasingly more staggered and disturbed by every little thing that happens during our day. Thankfully, we don’t have to settle for this, and there are actually a few things we can try to teach our bodies how to enter deep sleep and wake up feeling truly rested.

The benefits of relaxing music

Studies have shown how listening to relaxing music and natural sounds can benefit our sleeping experience. This is because these sounds have the power of controlling our fight-or-flight instinct and relaxing our nervous system. They also increase our melatonin levels, allowing us to keep the stresses of our day at bay and finally fall asleep.

In fact, a study from the University of Michigan Health System has shown that listening to relaxing music acts as the equivalent of meditating. To the point where this type of sound has been used even in hospitals to help patients alleviate stress and pain.

The benefits of meditation

In the same way, meditation is an ancient practice that for decades has been employed by people to counter the negative effects that stress has on our bodies and minds. We live in a society that loves to rush things, but we desperately need to remember to take moments to just do nothing for our brains to recover from this pressure. This is obviously not easy, as it no longer comes as natural to us, but it’s not impossible to do.

Calming nature

In addition to music and meditation, the environment we sleep in also affects the way we sleep. Research shows that sleeping in a room with a cool temperature is what is most natural to us and leads to deeper sleep. You can discover more about this topic and learn how you can become a natural cool sleeper here.

This is our guide to relaxation and better sleep, featuring the excellent formula of relaxing music and meditation:

  1. Go to a room where there is no external noise and you can relax easier. Then, click play on the music we have provided for you (you can find it under this paragraph) and close your eyes.
  2. Now, let things go. Ignore the racing thoughts that come up to your mind and focus on your breath.
  3. Relax your body and then start counting your breath, 1 for breathing in, 2 for breathing out, and so on until you get to 10 breaths.
  4. Doing this for just 5 minutes every day is enough to see improvements. Don’t worry if your mind wanders to something else when you meditate. Just bring it back to counting breaths until you fall asleep.

While we are specifically talking about sleep, nothing is stopping you from trying this at any time of the day. In fact, learning how to lower your stress levels and calm down during the day would also benefit the way you sleep even if you don’t necessarily do these things just before going to bed.

So, let’s get the relaxation started! Listen to the relaxing music available on our blog and follow the steps above to calm down and take 5 minutes of your day to relax. How did it make you feel? Did it help you kick the worries of your day away and did it improve your mood? Remember this feeling and check this guide again every day to make it part of your routine.
